Congratulations to Operations Supervisor Erin Kerry, who was recognized for her outstanding achievement of 10 Years of service to Space Center Houston! How is this possible at such a young age? She started out as a costume character at the ripe old age of 17 and journeyed on to a path of success! Read her story:

(above: Erin “clowning” around as a young crew member)

“Well, in all honesty I didn’t know I would be here this long when I first started 10 years ago. I wanted to work somewhere close to home, only on the weekends, and I didn’t want to work at night. . SCH fit the bill – and I was able to work on the weekends, and still have a social life. As I went through college, SCH worked with my school schedule allowing me to come in later, or leave early when needed. I worked in Attractions as a host for 2 years, then cross-trained as a Costume Character. I did a lot of cool Costume Character appearances all over town and out of town sometimes too.

I was promoted to back-up lead in Attractions, where I first became aware that I liked being a leader. After 2 years of that everything took a more serious turn when I took the full-time position of Tram Status Lead in 2002. — Being the leader of the Tram crew was one of the most challenging things I have ever done, but extremely rewarding at the same time. The responsibility of it was so frightening; leading people that were my same age was difficult, but as I became more and more comfortable in my role and learned how to make it work, I started to know that management would be my career path. One of the best memories I have of working in Trams was of several crew members that insistently called me “Skip” – I had no idea why, but I went along with it. Months later someone finally told me that that’s what baseball players call their coach and I was really touched by that. —

I have be working as an Ops Supervisor now for a little over a year, and one of the things I find most enjoyable about my job is being able to have an impact on the guests that visit our Center. It gives me a sense of pride to be able to see the crew members doing their jobs well, and guests enjoying it. Especially when it comes to the Tram Tour, after all, I did spend 5 of my 10 years out there. And I cant help but think that their success comes from some of the rules that I helped make over the years. — But the aspect of my job that is really the most special to me is being able to go see the Space Shuttle launch – what an awesome experience. It’s a dream responsibility so I think I’ll stick around for a few more years. =)”
