11 Reasons to Celebrate Apollo 11 at Space Center Houston

In July 1969, millions of people across the globe watched in awe as Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed their Lunar Module on the Moon’s Sea of Tranquility.  Stepping onto the lunar surface, Armstrong gave perhaps one of history’s most famous quotes; “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” The Apollo Program, with its 6 successful lunar landings, is often cited as the greatest technological achievement in human history. Visitors are invited to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Lunar Landing and all of NASA’s Apollo era missions up close and personal at Space Center Houston. Explore and discover unique artifacts like no place on Earth. Really.

1.) Presidential Podium–“We Choose to Go to the Moon”

In a famous speech at Rice University on Sept. 12 1962, behind this very podium, President John. F Kennedy boldly stated his challenge to put a man on the Moon by the end of the decade. The mission was a success with Apollo 11, and this unique piece of history can be viewed on permanent display featured as part of Space Center Houston’s “On Human Destiny” film presentation.

George Lucas Collection Hits Space Center Houston

Space Center Houston exhibits staff along with Laela French, collections manager for LucasFilm Ltd, unveil iconic Star Wars artifacts which will be on display starting Friday as part of The Cinema of George Lucas Exhibit and the interactive Live the Adventure experience.

“Space” Scrubs for a Cause

Space Center Houston staff has decked out a pair of medical scrubs as a participant in MedVance Institute’s “Scrubs for a Cause” event. The decorated scrubs will be on display at the MedVance Institute one-year anniversary party on Thursday, May 21 located at 450 N. Sam Houston Parkway. The scrubs will be voted on by guests and the winning designers will bring home a $1,000 check for charity.Good luck to all of the participants!

Space Center Houston Nominated for Nickelodeon Award!

Nickelodeon’s ParentsConnect, the online resource for parenting advice and community, is allowing parents to pick the best of their local communities with its Second Annual Parents’ Picks Awards. Space Center Houston is one of Houston’s nominees. Users can vote online for nominees May 15 until July 15, and ParentsConnect will announce the winners online on Aug. 17. The 2009 award winners will be featured on ParentsConnect throughout the year.
HOW TO VOTE: The Second Annual Parents’ Picks Awards will identify winners in 52 major U.S. cities. Categories include: best kids’ museum; best toy store; best playground/park; family restaurant; and many more. Users can vote for nominees online at http://gocitykids.parentsconnect.com/parents-picks until July 15 to help determine which nominees are “top picks” in their city.
All Parents’ Picks businesses are nominated based on recommendations from ParentsConnect local city editors who live and work in the cities they cover, in conjunction with feedback from the ParentsConnect community. Users’ votes and rankings ultimately determine which venues are selected as winners in their respective categories.
